On Being Burdened With Jerusalem

"Jerusalem": The very name conjurs up emotions that defy practical definition. Jesus wept over the city of Jerusalem! What could be more dramatic than that?

The whole scope of human history is tied up in the epic nostalgic controversy over Jerusalem. Many portions of this months newsletter have required the concentration of my mind upon current news events related to the Camp David Summit and writing newsy-type articles relating to prophecy. I always want these newsletters to be Biblically based and carry a Holy Spirit guided accounting of Jesus soon return, so I would like to focus attention now to a very simple but important theme regarding the seemingly sudden world preoccupation with the city of Jerusalem.

Approximately 2,500 years ago the Old Testament prophet Zechariah prophesied about the events which are happening right before our very eyes. Zechariah offerred information about how important Jerusalem is in God's sight in his plan to restore Israel, and to bless the entire world through Israel.

Even the Hebrew word "Zechariah", carries with it a promise. It means "Yahweh remembers". Indeed, God promised to remember Jerusalem, and to bring glory to the city.

      Zechariah 1:14-16 states:

So the angel that communed with me ( Zechariah ), said unto me, Cry thou, saying, Thus saith the lord of hosts; I ( God ) am jealous for Jerusalem and for Zion with a great jealousy.

And I ( God ) am very sore displeased with the heathen that are at ease: for I was but a little displeased, and they helped forward the affliction.

Therefore thus saith the lord; I am returned to Jerusalem with mercies; my house shall be built in it, saith the Lord of hosts, and a line shall be stretched forth upon Jerusalem. And read in Zechariah 1:8

For thus saith the Lord of hosts; after the glory hath he me unto the nations which spoiled you; ( Jerusalem ) for he that toucheth you toucheth the apple of God's eye. Preoccupying oneself with Jerusalem is a serious matter as you can easily see. God has even stamped his name and reputation upon this city as indicated in I Kings 11:32-36 and in II Chronicles 6:6.

Jerusalem has indeed been trodden down by the heathen nations of this world now for 2,500 years as Jesus alluded to in his Olivet discourse; and God is very sorely displeased about that affliction; but God also says he will return unto that city and build his house there yet again.

There is a dire warning for those Gentile nations which overly concern themselves with enacting out a formula for international conflict resolution regarding the city God has chosen for his name. Zechariah has given us some of the most dynamic prophecy with a perfect time-setting for today and the ongoing talks about Jerusalem!

( Zechariah 12:1-2 ) The burden of the word of the Lord for Israel, saith the Lord, which stretcheth forth the heavens and layeth the foundations of the earth, and formeth the spirit of man within him.

Behold I ( God ) will make Jerusalem a cup of trembling unto all the people round about, when they shall be in siege both against Judah and against Jerusalem.

Here in these words, God identifies himself as the great Creator and continues to say that he will cause the city of Jerusalem to become a great world-wide diplomatic-religious-political perplexity that seemingly defies solving. He further includes that it will be when the areas of ancient Judah and the Old City shall be sieged against. This is precisely the situation of today regarding the Palestinian peace process! Judah makes up the area today referred to as the West Bank and Jerusalem is claimed by them as their capitol.

God specifically warns it will be a problem to all the people round about. Today every single nation in the Arab world is plotting to disect Jerusalem and the West Bank from Israeli possession. Even the rest of the world is compelled to get involved because of the vast oil reserves of the region.

Zechariah 12:3 And in that day will I make Jerusalem a burdensome stone for ALL people; all that burden themselves with it shall be CUT TO PIECES, though all the peoples of the earth be gathered together against it.

Yes, the United States is burdened with Jerusalem!

It is right in front of our very eyes right now! Our President and state department are burdened by the great cup of trembling that God has made the city of Jerusalem to become! “That Day” mentioned by Zechariah, is the day when Israel is back in its homeland and has the whole world nipping at his heels demanding that Israel comply with multiple UN resolutions concerning Jerusalem!

It is beyond me how a so-called Christian nation can actually be LEADING in the efforts of heathen nations to dismantle Israel from Jerusalem! So our nation is in direct contention with GOD almighty himself over Jerusalem. If the United States does not discontinue these efforts then we stand to face being CUT TO PIECES; just as Zechariah warned.
